  • Our strategy

By increasing the water efficiency of our operations, we reduce our exposure to the risks associated with water scarcity and minimise our water footprint, generate cost savings and stand ready for potential future legislation.

On our new projects, we apply the Environmental Standards for Retail Development (ESRD) requirements to reduce equipment water consumption and promote water reuse. In our shopping centres in operation, we identify further improvements that need to be made to increase water efficiency and include investment measures (such as the purchase of more water efficient equipment) within shopping centres' annual capital expenditure budget. We also implement initiatives to increase water-saving awareness among staff, service providers and tenants. With the eco-efficiency measures introduced over the past eight years, we were able to save 239 million litres of water and avoid costs of over €641,600, in 2010.

    Long-Term Objectives

Attain a level of water consumption at or below three litres per visit (aggregated across all Sonae Sierra shopping centres) by 2020.
At least 10% of total water consumed at Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres to be ‘grey water' or harvested rainwater by 2020.
Develop and implement a long-term strategy to ensure a secure water supply at Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres, with a particular focus on locations that are vulnerable to water shortages, by 2020.
Ensure that all discharges comply with Sonae Sierra's wastewater quality standards and pollutant limits, by 2020.

    Targets for 2011

Attain a level of water consumption at or below 3.63 litres per visit (aggregated across all Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres).
Implement wastewater reuse or rainwater harvesting systems at a further five Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres.
