Our strategy
We aim to reduce the amount of waste generated on our development sites, shopping centres in operation and corporate offices that is disposed of in landfill. We do this by continually identifying and implementing measures to improve our waste management practices, seeking to reduce waste production and increase waste recycling, reuse, recovery and composting wherever these options are available.
Good waste management practices can reduce our impact on the environment, create financial benefits and ensure we are prepared for more stringent regulation on this issue. Since 2002, we have increased recycling rates across our shopping centre portfolio by 168%, helping us to diverted from landfill some 15,770 tonnes of waste and avoid waste disposal costs of around €1 million in 2010. We have similarly made significant improvements in waste recycling rates on construction sites and in our corporate offices. |
Long-Term Objectives
| Increase the proportion of total waste (by weight) that is recycled, recovered or reused in order to obtain a minimum recycling rate of 55% across Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres by 2020. |
| Reduce the proportion of waste (by weight) that is sent to landfill in order to keep below a maximum limit of 30% of waste sent to landfill across Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres by 2020. |
| Increase the proportion of total waste (by weight) that is recycled, recovered or reused in order to obtain a minimum recycling rate of 80% across Sonae Sierra corporate offices by 2020. |
| Maintain a high level of performance in terms of waste recycling in construction projects and aim to increase the proportion of construction materials with recycled content. |
Targets for 2011
| Achieve a minimum average recycling rate of 52% across Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres. |
| Guarantee that the proportion of waste (by weight) sent to landfill across Sonae Sierra owned shopping centres does not exceed 38%. |
| Increase the proportion of total waste (by weight) that is recycled or recovered in order to obtain a minimum recycling rate of 71% across Sonae Sierra corporate offices. |
| Aim for each new project to achieve a minimum waste construction recycling rate of 85%, and refurbishment projects to achieve a minimum waste construction recycling rate of 60%. |
