  • Our strategy

With 49 operational shopping centres, cinco projects under construction and eight corporate offices in Europe and Brazil, we are responsible for the safety of millions of people who work at or visit our sites on a daily basis. Our Safety and Health (S&H) goal is to prevent all accidents, thereby protecting every person present on our premises.

The Personæ Project, which was implemented between 2004 and 2008, allowed us to create a safety culture across all our sites and activities and to develop the basis of our current S&H Management System. In 2008, our S&H Management System was the first in the shopping centre industry to be certified according to OHSAS 18001. Today it provides us with the tools necessary to maintain a safety and health culture embedded throughout all our activities, minimising risks and promoting a safer and healthier lifestyle to all the people who visit our shopping centres. To date, 24 of our shopping centres and two of our construction projects have obtained OHSAS 18001 certification for their local S&H Management System.

    Long-Term Objectives

Enhance the well-being of our workforce and reduce the rate and severity of workplace accidents and occupational diseases, aiming towards zero.
Anticipate and prevent all safety risks on Sonae Sierra construction sites, minimising the number of accidents and their severity, aiming towards zero.
Provide a safe environment for everyone who visits or works within Sonae Sierra shopping centres, aiming towards zero accidents, and promote safety and health conscious behaviour among our tenants, suppliers and visitors.
Obtain OHSAS 18001 certification for all Sonae Sierra construction projects and owned assets that we've managed for two or more years by 2015.

    Targets for 2011

Reduce the Lost Workday Case Accidents Frequency Rate (LWCAFR) on construction sites by at least 5% in comparison with the 2010 result.
Reduce the number of accidents level three, four and five1 per million visits and reduce the LWCAFR of service suppliers in operations by at least 5%, in comparison with the 2010 result.
Reduce the Lost Workday Case Accidents Frequency Rate (LWCAFR) on construction works by 5% in comparison with the 2009 result.
Renew OHSAS 18001 certification at a corporate level and achieve it at a further five shopping centres and at all construction sites opening in 2011.
