    Our strategy

As a shopping centre developer and manager, Sonae Sierra's strategy to reduce biodiversity and habitat loss focuses on the development and construction phases where our ecological impacts are the greatest.

We perform a Preliminary Environmental Evaluation (PEE) on all new projects to identify the potential environmental impacts of the project's design, construction and operation on the site's biodiversity and specify mitigation measures. We monitor the implementation of these recommendations to ensure that impacts on biodiversity are minimised as far as possible. Where possible, we also reduce adverse impacts on biodiversity and habitats by using sustainable materials to build and manage our centres and by managing the ecology at our operational centres in a way that protects and conserves important species and habitats.

    Long-Term Objectives

Promote the use of previously developed land or Brownfield land for new Sonae Sierra shopping centre projects.
Strive to protect and enhance biodiversity on both existing Sonae Sierra sites and new projects and add value to new projects by actively integrating biodiversity whenever possible, taking into account the regional context.

    Targets for 2011

Achieve 100% compliance with the approved recommendations of all preliminary environmental evaluations (or equivalent study) on our new completed projects.
Guarantee that at least 20% of uncovered parking areas use permeable pavement surfaces (all new Sonae Sierra shopping centres with investment proposal approved after 1 January 2009).
